Amazing and uplifting

I happened across a story on CNN.com about a Dutch husband-and-wife filmmaker team who invented a novel way of facilitating reconciliation in the former Yugoslavia. One major obstacle to reconciliation is the persistence of rumor which, in turn, is compounded by the forced estrangement of the different ethnic groups. One may want to get in touch with former friends but fear to do so because of rumors that one's friends committed atrocities. The filmmakers decided to have people videotape "letters" to their former friends and colleagues, which the filmmakers would then deliver, sometimes expending great efforts to track them down. The friend, upon viewing the letter, was often compelled to respond, usually with a great deal of positive enthusiasm. Watching some of these "video letters" is at once both fascinating and heart-wrenching--fascinating to see the processes by which old relationships are rekindled, but heart-wrenching because so much pain and anguish suffuses the letters.
